Thanks Gardner for this essay. Powerful thoughts indeed. As I read this I was struck by several thoughts. I was reminded of a high school teacher who asked us if the earliest microbes had conscious thought could they have possibly imagined the kind of world we live in now? And can we now, as conscious beings, possibly know what our world will be like in a thousand years? A few do try to think out to those realms. Those who are the boldest dreamers and experimenters of what technology and humanity can offer us. The ones who can catch a glimmer of this edge we call visionaries or perhaps mad men and women. Who really knows what type of world lies out there years ahead? What would Da Vinci have thought of this world where we routinely circle Earth in jets? What would Edison think of today’s electric world? What would Steve Jobs or Bill Gates think of our world in 100 years? I think more than anything technology pushes us forward whether stubbornly or with open arms. It forces us to try and imagine what is possible and challenges us to go further. It reminds us that the journey is quite possibly better than the destination. We may not know exactly where our technology and innovation will lead us. But we do know there will be the Da Vincis and Edisons forever pushing us in our connected worlds towards some impossible future that just might someday be possible. This is why the edge of technology fascinates me. It is the Terra Incognita of our age.
